How Quartz Crystal Microbalance Works
- Crystal Starts Vibrating:
- Firstly, when the system is on, the oscillator sends an electrical current to the quartz crystal. This causes it to vibrate at a specific frequency.
- Depositing Material:
- The deposition source in the vacuum chamber then evaporates or sputters the material. This material deposits on the quartz crystal and eventually builds up on the crystalโs surface.
- Crystal Gets Heavier:
- As the material sticks to the crystal, it adds weight to the crystal. The added weight slows down the crystalโs vibration because itโs harder to vibrate when itโs heavier.
- Frequency Change:
- Meanwhile, the oscillator measures the frequency of the crystalโs vibration. As the crystal gets heavier, the frequency decreases. The deposition monitor tracks the speed of deposition for the material, as well as the thickness of the layer.
- Measuring the Change:
- The data system monitors the frequency change and uses this information to calculate how much material has been added. The amount of frequency shift tells us how thick the film is and how much mass has been deposited on the crystal.
- Real-Time Feedback:
- The deposition monitor gives real-time feedback about the deposition rate, showing how quickly the film is forming. This helps operators adjust the process if needed, ensuring the film is the right thickness.

Why Is This Useful?
- Precise Control: The quartz crystal microbalance system allows precise control of the deposition process, ensuring films build up exactly as needed.
- Real-Time Monitoring: The deposition monitor and data system provide continuous feedback, so you immediately know how much material has been deposited and can adjust the process.
- High Sensitivity: The system can measure even tiny changes in mass, which is perfect for making very thin films used in things like electronics, sensors, and coatings.
